Software

Basic

Operating Systems

• Server: OpenBSD. Extremely lightweight and the base system has everything you need to setup and host a website without any additional package installation. The extensive set of manual pages is all you need to learn how to set up the included webserver, httpd(8), and use acme-client(1) to generate SSL certificates for your website. The only additional packages I installed were git for hosting git repositories and stagit for automatically generating the pages here on push.

Terminal Emulator

• st. Cuts out all the legacy bloat that most terminal emulators have and is extremely easy to hack on.

Shell

• OpenBSD KSH. Yes even on Linux. Very fast and lightweight but can also do advanced things like command completion. All my shell scripts are written in POSIX sh and if I didn't care about portability I would use Plan 9's rc since it's syntax is actually sane.

Text Editing & Programming

• vis. vis takes the best of vi and of Plan 9's sam and melds them together into a highly efficient and easily extendable editor. Configuration and extensions are primarily done via the included lua interface and the source code is also easy to hack on. I have written a couple of plugins, vis-lint and vis-gpg, in addition to my thorough personal configuration. I am also a current maintainer of the project.

Electronics

Schematic Capture and PCB Layout

• KiCad. Altium, Eagle, etc. in shambles. Seriously, this software rocks. I've made everything from simple single layer boards that I have milled myself all the way up to extremely dense multilayer boards with thousands of traces. It runs everywhere and just gets better with every release.
